January 7, 2010, Washington, D.C. – Governor Sean Parnell today met with Air Force Vice Chief of Staff General Carrol H. “Howie" Chandler at the Pentagon to discuss the mission of the Air Force in Alaska.

“The Air Force in Alaska obviously plays a significant role both in national defense and in the state’s economy and community life,” Governor Parnell said. “It was a pleasure to meet with General Chandler and discuss maintaining and expanding military missions in Alaska. General Chandler is a strong advocate for Alaska, and he expressed his appreciation for the community support that the military receives here. I look forward to working with him.”

Alaska is home to Eielson and Elmendorf Air Force Bases, at least 10 different types of aircraft, about 9,000 airmen and about 12,000 of their family members.

General Chandler is the former commander of the U.S. Air Force in the Pacific and former commander of the Alaska Command.
