$75K Fund Will Prepare for the 75th Statehood Celebration

ANCHORAGE, ALASKA - Jan. 15, 2010 - Members of the Alaska Statehood Commission, Alaska Community Foundation, Anchorage Statehood Celebration Committee, and ConocoPhillips gathered in downtown Anchorage to plant the financial seeds of Alaska’s next great anniversary, and unveil a work of art commemorating the state’s 50th year of statehood.

The check presented this morning set aside $50,000 for the Alaska Community Foundation to establish the 75th Anniversary of Statehood Fund.  But a new donation was quick in coming. This afternoon, the Alaska Statehood Commission directed an additional $25,000 to the fund, bringing the total to $75,000.  The fund will provide money for planning and festivities for the 75th Anniversary of Statehood in 2034.

Friday’s event also marked the unveiling of the Statehood Panel.  This lighted, brushed steel installation stands seven feet tall and is one of four panels retrofitted from the “Light of the North,” the torch that was commissioned to mark the 50th Anniversary of Alaska Statehood. A copy of the Pledge of Unity signed by representatives from all over the state as part of the 50th anniversary festivities has also been incorporated into the design. The panel unveiled Friday will be on public display at ConocoPhillips until it is placed in a permanent home.  Of the three other panels, one is in the Alaska State Museum in Juneau, one is in Fairbanks, and one will be placed in Nome before embarking on a larger statewide tour.
