UAF to Host 41st Annual Festival of Native Arts
Fairbanks, Alaska (AK) – The 41st annual Festival of Native Arts has begun. This celebration of dance, storytelling, language and crafts, extends over a three day period, from Thursday, February 27 through Saturday, March 1. Dozens of Alaska Native performance groups and artists are expected to participate in this year’s festival entitled, “Sharing the Voices of Our Ancestors.” Audience members are encouraged to arrive early to dance events, as seating is limited. All events are free.
Festivities start Thursday and Friday at 6:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. Events on Saturday, March 1, are from 5:00 p.m.-10 p.m. On Saturday, before the festivities begin, the Dena Film Celebration begins at 12:00 p.m. and ends at 5:00 p.m. Evening activities are available to view streaming online at http:/fna.community.uaf.edu./eventinformation/livestream/
Alaska Native students and Student Orientation Services at UAF established the Fairbanks Festival of Native Arts in 1973. Originally, the festival focused each night on a specific Alaska Native culture. Today, it has grown in its depth and focus and now features Alaska Native dance groups from throughout the state and nation. Alaska Native artists display and sell their work at the craft bazaar in the Great Hall, which is outside the Davis Concert Hall.
In 2014 the American Bus Association listed the Festival of Native Arts to its Top 100 Events list. The association’s Top 100 Events in North America is an annual compendium of the best events for group travel in the United States and Canada.
