UAS Sitka celebrates Career and Technical Education Month
SITKA, Alaska, Feb. 8, 2013 -- The University of Alaska Southeast Sitka Campus is honoring National Career and Technical Education (CTE) Month in February. CTE programs provide a solid foundation in basic academic skills that are complemented by hands-on, competency-based technical skills.
The UAS Sitka Campus offers CTE programs in a variety of careers. Our CTE programs include apprenticeship technology, construction technology, welding, health information management, health sciences, health care privacy and security, nursing and pre-nursing, and pre-radiologic technology. Some programs offer associate of applied sciences (AAS) degrees, others offer occupational certificates, and some programs offer both.
This year, the UAS Sitka Campus is adding two new CTE programs. We are adding a law enforcement (AAS degree) program, in partnership with the Alaska Department of Public Safety Training Academy in Sitka. Also, the UAS fisheries technology program (certificate and AAS degrees), previously located in Ketchikan, is being moved to Sitka.
CTE programs are a great way to prepare students to be college- and career-ready for the current job market in professions that are expected to experience the most growth over the next decade. CTE programs also help effectively train Alaskans for the jobs necessary to support and sustain the state’s economic growth.
