Rural Alaska Landfill Operators (RALO) Course
March 12-14 and April 23-25, 2013 Anchorage, Alaska at the BP Energy Center
The Alaska Forum, Inc. and the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA), Alaska Chapter, are pleased to offer the Rural Alaska Landfill Operator (RALO) course in Anchorage March 12-14 and April 23-25, 2013. There is no cost for this RALO course thanks to support from USDA Rural Development.
COURSE DESCRIPTION: The Rural Alaska Landfill Operator (RALO) course is for the designated landfill operator and administrator in a village with a Class III landfill or open dump, and focuses on the duties of the landfill operator, their personal safety, and the safety of the village. Emphasis is placed on the importance of the landfill operator's role to keep the village clean and the landfill free from harmful substances. Participants will learn about landfill regulations and requirements, household hazardous waste, waste separation and screening, waste reduction and segregation, recycling, personal protection equipment, and much more. This course is hosted by Alaska Forum, Inc with trainers and expertise provided in cooperation with Solid Waste Administration of North America, (SWANA), Alaska Chapter. Total Reclaim will provide a training regarding electronic and other potentially hazardous wastes. The presentation will include general information on e-waste, as well as how to safely package, stage, and ship materials for recycle. With grant support from the USDA, the Alaska Forum is able to provide a limited number of $500 reimbursement scholarships for qualified attendee travel expenses. These scholarships are available to landfill operators employed in their village.

The RALO training will be hosted at the BP Energy Center, 900 East Benson Blvd, in Anchorage.
There are several hotels available within walking distance of the BP Energy Center. Residence Inn of Anchorage Midtown 907-563-9844, Best Western Golden Lion Hotel 907-561-1522, and Extended Stay America 907-646-4208 are the closest available hotels. Locations of all are available online.

Travel to Anchorage:
Participants are required to make their own travel arrangements. Participants should arrange their travel to arrive before 8:00 AM on Tuesday and depart after 5:00 PM on Thursday. Reimbursement will only be provided to participants that attend the entire training event and meet the qualification previously noted in the registration/announcement.
Travel Funding Opportunity:
The Alaska Forum is offering partial scholarships available for attendees who are current landfill operators. Scholarships are to cover travel and lodging expenses (not to exceed $500) for the RALO training and certification (per diem/meals not included). These funds are limited and are only provided on a reimbursement basis for pre-approved participants. Reimbursement for travel and lodging expenses will be provided for the RALO training to only a limited number of attendees and only where all the following conditions are met:
Participant has recommendation and approval from their village, city, or tribal council,
Participant has received prior approval for cost reimbursement from Alaska Forum, Inc.,
Participant agrees to comply with all local ordinances,
Participant must be employed or designated as a landfill operator in a village,
Participant must successfully complete the training and receive their RALO Certification,
Participant completes the registration forms and is approved in advance by the Alaska Forum, Inc.

Alaska Forum Travel Funded Participants:
Participants selected to receive the travel and lodging reimbursement (not to exceed $500) will receive notification by email. Forms for reimbursement of travel expenses will be provided at the training. Receipts must accompany all expense requests. Reimbursement takes approximately 4-8 weeks. You must bring sufficient funding to cover your expenses during the training!
