Rondy’s Popular Events: Dog Races, Reindeer Racing, Miners & Trappers Charity Ball and more
Anchorage, AK: Fur Rondy’s most popular events are right around the corner!
The Alaska Sled Dog & Racing Association announced yesterday that the Rondy World Championship Sled Dog Races will take place as scheduled on February 22, 23 and 24. The possibility of cancelling them due to lack of snow had kept all eyes on the weather forecast this month, but with enough snow on the racing trails, the show will go on!
The race, which pits sprint mushing teams against each other over three days of the same 25-mile route for a total of 75 miles, starts at the corner of 4th Avenue and D Street in downtown Anchorage and winds through the city’s forests, across major roads and back downtown. The trail is lined with thousands of spectators in this cornerstone event of Fur Rondy, now in its 78th year. Stop in the Fur Rondy Shop featuring Caffe D’arte at 4th & D when you come down to watch the dog races!
Now is the time to register for Rondy events like Running of the Reindeer, Snowshoe Softball, Yukigassen, Outhouse Races, Frostbite Footrace & Costume Fun Run, adult and youth hockey tournaments and even a Vintage Snowmachine Exhibition. Participants can go to
www.furrondy.net to sign up for any of these ever-popular Rondy events.
It’s also time to buy your tickets to Rondy shows and parties such as the Melodrama (this year’s title is “Turnagain Temptations”), Rondy on Ice, the Miners & Trappers Charity Ball and the Rondy kick-off party—the Jim Beam Jam. Buy tickets at the online Rondy Shop
(https://rondy-shop.myshopify.com/collections/event-tickets-1), or at CenterTix for the Melodrama only (http://alaskapac.centertix.net/eventperformances.asp?evt=1054). Also on tap is the Rondy Brew First Tap shindig happening this Friday, Feb. 15, from 5pm-7pm
at Humpy’s Great Alaskan Alehouse. This year’s Rondy Brew, created and fermented in Alaska by award-winning brewery Anchorage Brewing Company, is a white IPA. Join us for a taste or two!
And last, but not least, the Official Fur Rondy Guide is now available at the Fur Rondy Shop at the corner of 4th & D, and will be appearing in racks around town in the next few days—at large retailers like Fred Meyer, Carr’s/Safeway and WalMart, to other locations such as Chevron and anywhere there are racks for the Anchorage Press and Coast magazine. It will not, as in previous years, be available as an insert in the Anchorage Daily News, but will be inserted into the Arctic Warrior on JBER and the Mat-Su Valley Frontiersman.
