Legislators Help Raise Money for Special Reunions for Returning Soldiers and their Children

JUNEAU-Several Legislators are teaming up to help raise money through the Wounded Warriors program to provide unique opportunities for soldiers returning from overseas to have a special reunion with their children through hunting and fishing trips in Alaska.  The fundraiser is a dance and a silent auction that will take place at the Hangar Ballroom on Wednesday, February 27th, 2013 from 6:30 to 10pm at the Hangar Ballroom located at 2 Marine Way in Downtown Juneau.

Senator Pete Kelly and Representative Dan Saddler will play with the band, Spank the Dog, to provide music for the dance.  General Pat Gamble, President of the University of Alaska, will guest star on electric guitar.

“Dan Saddler and I are the Co-Chairs of the Joint Armed Services Committee.   Sometimes it is hard to find ways to really help, but when I learned Pat Gamble, a former four star General was a guitarist, the idea of this fundraiser visit instantly formed,” said Senator Kelly.   “This is going to be a great time.   After all, it’s not every day you get to play drums with a four star.”

“I can’t think of a better way for returning service members to reconnect with the people they love, in the state they love, than taking their children on fishing or hunting trips in Alaska’s great outdoors,” said Representative Saddler.  “I’m proud to support this effort, and pleased to be a member of the band helping the 673rd Force Support Squadron raise money for this good cause.”

Silent auction items include a cruise in the Caribbean, a Fairbanks weekend adventure, an Alaskan Bear Hunting adventure donated by Senator Charlie Huggins, a roundtrip railroad ride between Anchorage and Seward, lunch with the Senate Finance Co-Chairs Kevin Meyer and Pete Kelly, a shotgun, a resonator guitar and a box of tanner crab.

“These soldiers give up precious time with their loved ones to protect our freedom as Americans,” said Senate President Charlie Huggins.  “Something like this is the least we can do to give them some quality time with their families.”

Admittance to the event is free, but donations are encouraged.  Those who would like to donate to the program but can’t attend the event, can mail checks to:
