The rolling wheat fields of eastern Washington's Palouse region provide the backdrop for CIRI's latest investment in a major wind energy project. The Palouse Wind project began providing clean, renewable energy to customers in December.

Tikahtnu businesses are opening on schedule

Construction at Tikahtnu Commons in Anchorage is exceeding expectations. Old Navy recently opened, and Famous Footwear and Starbucks are now open for business in the 17,000 square-foot retail building south of McDonald's. Work on the Sam's Club warehouse continues on schedule with an expected opening in the Summer of 2013.

Jason Moore joined CIRI as the director of corporate communications in January. Moore comes most recently from MSI Communications based in Anchorage where he managed accounts for Alaska Native corporations, oil and gas companies and issue advocacy campaigns.

CIRI mailed the IRS 1099 forms to all shareholders for the 2012 tax year on January 25, 2013. Some shareholders will receive a second 1099 form if they also received 7(j) payments and/or shareholder prizes.

2013 Elders' payments and direct deposit information

The trustees of the CIRI Elders' Settlement Trust approved the 2013 distribution schedule for Elders' payments in December 2012. The payments will occur in the same months as CIRI's quarterly distributions in order to reduce the number of months that some Elders lose their social security income payments because their monthly income exceeds limitations set by the Social Security Administration.

Effort aimed at helping to revitalize indigenous languages

Fulfilling its commitment to preserve and promote the revitalization of Alaska Native languages, the Alaska Native Heritage Center is conducting a survey to help focus its language initiatives. The Center received a one-year grant from the Administration for Native Americans to develop the survey that is now located on the Center's website at www.alaskanative.net

Remodeling underway at Alaska Native Medical Center inpatient pediatrics

Improvements planned to benefit healing process for children and families

The Alaska Native Medical Center (ANMC), which is jointly owned and managed by the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium and Southcentral Foundation - CIRI's nonprofit health care affiliate - began remodeling to improve the inpatient pediatric facilities. The remodel is scheduled for completion in 2014 and includes culture-centered artwork and color schemes, child-friendly decorations and updated furniture.

The Sugpiaq dance group Imamsuat was invited to perform at the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI)  Jan. 18-20  as part of "Out of Many: A Multicultural Festival of Dance, Music and Story." CIRI shareholder Martha "Lalla" Williams made Imamsuat's regalia.
