Trout Unlimited Alaska Issues Statement on Agency’s Call for a Peer Review Panel for Bristol Bay Draft Watershed Assessment
Anchorage – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency today announced that it is seeking candidates who will serve on a peer review panel for its Draft Watershed Assessment for Bristol Bay. This is an important step in providing expert review for a document that will guide future decisions about large-scale development, including hard rock mining, in the watershed.
“We join the tribes, commercial fishing organizations, and Native and Village Corporations who support the agency's science-based approach on the Watershed Assessment,” said Tim Bristol, Director of TU’s Alaska Program. “If the agency relies on hard data we are wholly confident that the only logical conclusion from this process is that Pebble mine does not belong in Bristol Bay.”
The EPA has said it expects to release a draft of the assessment in late April.
