Anchorage Roads Affected by Freezing Rain Overnight
Anchorge drivers should be alert to icy road conditions this morning. All state roads have been sanded and are passable using normal winter driving conditions.
Residential roads are still very slick and some reports say rural roads are in some cases "impassable."
Starting around 7 pm last night rain fell on cold pavement causing the slick conditions. The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities has been working round the clock to handle the unusual weather event, chaining the tires of their two 20-yard belly dumps and five 8-yard sanders that worked all night to coat the state-owned highways.
"Traction is improved," said Mike Coffey, chief of maintenance and operations, "but caution is still advised."
