Scholarship Bill Passes Senate Education Committee
February 16, 2011, Anchorage, Alaska – Governor Sean Parnell today thanked the Senate Education Committee for moving Senate Bill 43 out of committee. The bill would create an investment fund and tax credits for the Alaska Performance Scholarship. The scholarships, established last year by Governor Parnell, incentivize Alaska students to take a rigorous curriculum and earn scholarships for post-secondary education in Alaska.
“I appreciate the careful consideration by the Senate Education Committee of this important legislation,” Governor Parnell said. “It will make a difference in the lives of families across our state, and improve our educational system as parents hold school districts accountable for strengthening their programs.”
The graduating class of 2011 will be the first eligible for this opportunity. Governor Parnell’s proposed Fiscal Year 2012 budget contains $8.2 million for the first year of scholarships. The bill now goes to the Senate Finance Committee.
