Report Says Alaskans Will Be Protected by Spending Caps in Health Reform Law
Health Care Spending Caps in Affordable Care Act Will Protect Alaska Families from Catastrophic Medical Expenses
New Report from Families USA Details How Many Alaskans Face Threat of Catastrophic Expenses and Quantifies the Savings the Affordable Care Act Will Bring
Washington, D.C.-A major benefit of the Affordable Care Act is the introduction of annual caps on out-of-pocket expenses. These caps will protect families from the high costs that can be associated with unexpected injuries or illnesses, such as accidents, sports injuries, cancer, diabetes, and other diseases.
Although the spending caps go into effect in 2014, the consumer health group Families USA asked The Lewin Group, a health care policy research and management consulting firm, to look at the impact of the caps on Alaska families as if the caps were going into effect in 2011.
The results of that analysis for Alaska demonstrate the tremendous positive benefit these spending caps will have on the lives and pocketbooks of Alaskans. The Families USA report, "Worry Less, Spend Less: Out-of-Pocket Spending Caps Protect Families in Alaska," will be released on Tuesday, March 1, 2011, and will spotlight the following state-specific information:
* The tens of thousands of Alaskans who currently face the threat of catastrophic family health care expenses;
* The tens of millions of dollars that Alaskans are expected to spend, above and beyond the out-of-pocket caps in 2011 alone;
* The number of these Alaskans who are in families where the head of the household is employed by a small business;
* The tens of millions of dollars that families of small business employees in Alaska are expected to spend, above and beyond the out-of-pocket caps in 2011 alone.
A multi-state teleconference for Alaska and other media will be held on Tuesday, March 1, 2011, to discuss the new Families USA report. For media unable to participate in this teleconference because of a schedule conflict, please contact the Families USA communications team for an MP3, which will be available shortly after 1 p.m. PST.
