Habitat for Humanity Partner Families Plan for the Future

Habitat for Humanity - Anchorage, The Alaska Pro Bono Project and The Alaska Bar Association are partnering to provide simple wills for local Habitat for Humanity Partner Families.  "It is not an expense that our clients are inclined to prioritize, however it helps us clarify their intent regarding the legacy that they create through our program" explains Margaret Forbes, Family Services Coordinator for Habitat. And their legacy is worth protecting; as of January 2010, the primary equity in the 52 mortgages interest-free mortgages serviced by Habitat exceeds $757,000 before any market-based equity earnings.

This clinic is an exceptional example of interagency cooperation. Local pro bono attorneys donate their time to consult with families, identify any potential issues and, after their appointment, Habitat partner families are headed home with a functional will in-hand. "It helps the families protect their legacy, it helps relieve the courts of avoidable probate, and it offers an opportunity for local attorneys to give back to their community," boasted Kara Nyquist, Executive Director of the Alaska Pro Bono Project.

Tonight's (Feb. 10) is the first of four estate clinics scheduled by Anchorage's  legal community over the next two years on behalf of all the Habitat homeowners, including the five families Habitat is planning to serve in 2010 and seven families Habitat will intake this fall for 2011 construction.

Habitat for Humanity-Anchorage is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry dedicated to building simple, decent homes in partnership with qualifying low-income families. Partner Families are mentored for successful homeownership, contribute sweat equity, then purchase their homes with interest-free financing. We invite everyone to join us as we seek to make affordable housing a matter of conscience and action.
