Alaska Fisheries Development Foundation announces Call for Product to enter contest now available

ANCHORAGE, Alaska Tuesday, December 9, 2014 — Alaska Fisheries Development Foundation (AFDF) announced today that the Call for Product for the 2015 Alaska Symphony of Seafood is now available.   The Alaska Symphony of Seafood is a competition for value added products made from Alaska seafood.  The event in 2015 will include two major improvements, including a new location (Juneau) and a new product category.  The Call for Product can be found at http://www.afdf.org/symphony-of-seafood/ and is due on December 31, 2014.

The new product category this year is called “Beyond the Plate” and will broadly include by-products of many types. The Beyond the Plate category is for consumer-ready products which are made with parts of seafood typically deemed to be fish waste or a by-product of the primary processing, such as fish oil, pet treats, fish leather, and many others.  Any questions regarding the Beyond the Plate category or whether a product qualifies for entry into this category can be directed to AFDF.  “The seafood industry has invested heavily in the development of new products from traditionally unused parts of Alaska seafood.  AFDF is excited to offer this new category to highlight and promote the improvements the industry has made to reduce fish waste, develop new products and increase the value of Alaska’s seafood,” said Julie Decker, Executive Director of AFDF.  “With the addition of this new category, entries will now have a total of eight chances to win national recognition for their products.”

Each product entered in the competition is grouped into one of four categories with a winner in each category: Retail, Foodservice, Smoked Products, and Beyond the Plate. Product entries are individually evaluated by a panel of expert judges during a private judging session. Criteria upon which evaluations are based may include: packaging and presentation, overall eating experience, price and potential for commercial success. Winners will include the highest scoring product from each category, a grand prize for the highest overall score, and People’s Choice Awards which will be given based on voting by participants at each of the three events held in Seattle, Anchorage and Juneau in February, 2015.  For more information, visit www.afdf.org/symphony-of-seafood/ .
