Gregor Freystaetter, MD, joins Providence Health & Services Alaska

New physician provides geriatric care at senior and extended care centers

ANCHORAGE, AK – Gregor Freystaetter, MD, who specializes in geriatric medicine, has joined the Providence Senior Care Center and Providence Extended Care Center. Geriatric medicine focuses on the care of elderly patients, usually 65 years and older. He is skilled in managing multiple disease symptoms and developing care plans that address the needs of older adults. Dr. Freystaetter has a special interest in bone health and has participated in a study focused on the screening rates for osteoporosis in elderly patients.

“Geriatric medicine offers a broad approach to our patients,” said Dr. Freystaetter. “We address their physical health concerns as well as their psychological and social needs.”

Dr. Freystaetter earned his medical degree at the University of Vienna Medical School in Vienna, Austria. He completed his residency in internal medicine at St. Vincent Hospital in Worcester, Mass., and completed his geriatric fellowship at Jackson Memorial Hospital and the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Miami, Fla.

“Dr. Freystaetter’s expertise in internal medicine and geriatrics is a great benefit to patients who wish to establish primary care,” said Cathie Schumacher, MD, medical director of the Providence Senior Care Center.

Providence Senior Care Center provides primary care for adults 55 years and older. The Senior Care Center, which is based on the patient-centered medical home model of care, opened January of 2011. Dr. Freystaetter will also serve residents at Providence Extended Care Center, which provides long-term care and rehabilitation services.

“Dr. Freystaetter brings specialized training and compassionate care to patients with multiple chronic diseases and physical impairments requiring long-term care,” said Karen Mailer, MD, medical director of the Providence Extended Care Center.
