ENI's JA in a Day at Nuiqsut Trapper School

ENI US Operating Co. Inc. and Junior Achievement teamed together on October 26, 2011 to teach  1-12th grade students work readiness, financial literacy and entrepreneurship.  The JA programs used for this event were Our Community, Our Nation, Economics for Success and Be Entrepreneurial.
Junior Achievement programs provide students with information that prepares them for the world of work and gives them the tools, through Junior Achievement programs and information from professional business volunteers, to succeed in today's global economy.

In one day, ENI and Junior Achievement taught 48 students important lessons about paying taxes, resources needed to run a successful business, credit scores and how to create a successful business start-up plan.
The volunteers that taught these programs were:
Dave Cook,Eni US Operating Co., Inc.
Kirk Morgan,Eni US Operationg Co., Inc.
Hans Neidig, Eni US Operating Co., Inc.
Flora Teo- Junior Achievement of Alaska, Inc.

The teachers involved during our programs were:
Sally Sonnichsen
Timothy Bowman
Sharon Hunt
Heather Belcick
David Bennett

All of the teachers felt that the information provided would definitely encourage students to start thinking about future career paths and what skills they will need to enter into the world of work and succeed in a global economy.  In a Junior Achievment survey, all of the teachers strongly agree that the volunteers encouraged students to be more aware of career choices & opportunities.

-"The staff and students loved having ENI come to our school and we appreciatethis amazing opportunity!"
- School Principal, Al Strack
Grades 1-8th completed a pre/post test to ensure that these programs had an impact.  Overall, test results showed an increase anywhere from  5-50%.
Studies show that students who experience JA are:
  • More likely to graduate from high school
  • More likely to go to college
  • Have a better understanding of global economy and entrepreneurship
  • More likely to select a 'business-related' major
ENI and Junior Achievement look forward to continuing this partnership with Nuiqsut Trapper School and possibly expanding their outreach trips to other communities on the North Slope Region.
