ASD gives 7,000 at-risk students access to new online math tutor

Created by Whizz Education, Using Math-Whizz part of the school's RTI Initiative to provide personalized instruction to raise student achievement

Seattle, WA (November 30, 2011) Whizz Education, creator of the online math tutor, Math-Whizz, announced today that the Anchorage School District is providing 7,000 at-risk students with access to Math-Whizz Tutoring Plus. Students will use the online math tutor during their regular school day as part of the District's Response to Instruction (RTI) initiative to improve student performance by providing personalized instruction.

"We underwent a rigorous evaluation process of solution providers who could help us provide personalized math instruction to our students," said Darla Jones, the district's executive director of Curriculum and Instructional Support. "We selected Whizz Education's program because it continually assesses the performance of each individual student and adjusts in real-time to strengthen the student's skills and improve his or her weaknesses. We are confident that we will see a significant improvement in the math mastery of our students."

Julie Patotzka, a Summer School Teacher at Bayshore Elementary School, used the program over the summer with a group of fifth and sixth graders. She said, "Every student, regardless of his or her attitude toward math, was actively engaged with and excited about the program. After 19 days of use, three of the 15 students improved their Math Ages by 0.31, 0.30, and 0.29 years respectively.  Many were spurred to work harder after seeing their reports."

To support learning, teachers can use the online platform that can be accessed anytime, anywhere with a computer and internet connection to monitor student progress, email students encouraging messages, print certificates of achievement, and provide parents with information on student progress.

"Our mission is to provide students with both the information and inspiration they need to succeed," said Ben Keogh, CEO of Whizz Education in the Unites States. "We have no doubt that the Anchorage School District will see the same success from using Math-Whizz that schools all over the world have experienced."

To ensure the ongoing quality of the implementation, Whizz Education is delivering a customized training for teachers and in-classroom support designed around the District's instructional goals. Math-Whizz will provide the teachers and administrators in the Anchorage School District with easy to interpret outcomes that will clearly show actual and relative math ability of students, classes and schools.
