Governor Parnell Thanks Education Task Force
FY 2012 Budget Includes $8.2 Million for Scholarship Awards
December 2, 2010, Anchorage, Alaska - Governor Sean Parnell thanked the Alaska State Legislature's Joint Higher Education Scholarship Funding Task Force, chaired by Senator Kevin Meyer, for its work to address a sustainable funding mechanism for the new performance-based scholarships. The task force considered a wide range of funding options, which are incorporated in the final report released today.
"While a constitutionally protected fund would be the most secure in the long term, a designated fund with sufficient capitalization to provide the estimated $20 million annual need for Alaska Performance Scholarship awards will provide a sustainable funding stream," Governor Parnell said.
The performance scholarships are one of Governor Parnell's top priorities. Based on the experience in other states with similar scholarships, Alaskans can expect an increase in the high school graduation rate and academic achievement, as well as better preparation for college or job-training, the governor said.
The governor's FY 2012 budget will include $8.2 million for the first year performance scholarship awards. In addition, the governor will propose legislation to establish the Alaska Performance Scholarship Fund.
"I look forward to working with the Legislature to create a sustainable funding mechanism for the Alaska Performance Scholarship," Governor Parnell said. "The task force report lays the groundwork for the upcoming session."
Performance scholarships will be available for the 2011 high school graduating class.
