Governor Parnell Issues Statement on OCS

December 1, 2010, Juneau, Alaska - Governor Sean Parnell today issued the following statement in response to U.S. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar's announcement regarding oil and gas development in the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS).

"Secretary Salazar's announcement represents a positive way for Shell to move forward. However, I am concerned the Interior Department did not provide a decision timeline to assure a 2011 drilling season. I am pleased that the department will honor existing leases in the Beaufort and Chukchi seas, but I remain concerned about how future requests to explore or develop will be treated.

"The state will actively participate in the process to determine whether further lease sales will be scheduled in the Beaufort and Chukchi seas. OCS oil and gas development is not only important for Alaska, but to the nation as well."
