Congressman Young Comments On The 50th Anniversary Of ANWRWashington, D.C. - Alaskan Congressman Don Young released the following statement today in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge:
"There is a quote etched in marble above the Speaker's chair in the House chamber. It states 'Let us develop the resources of our land, call forth its powers, build up its institutions, promote all its great interests, and see whether we also, in our day and generation, may not perform something worthy to be remembered.' What should serve as a reminder that God has blessed our country with an abundance of natural resources, instead seems to have become invisible to our Speaker and many Members of this House.
"The barren tundra in the northern plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is home to an estimated 3-9 billion barrels of recoverable oil which could provide roughly 1.5 million barrels per day for at least 25 years. We are currently importing two-thirds of our oil from other countries, including some very hostile to the United States. Our country and its people deserve better. On this fiftieth anniversary of ANWR, let us vow to do what is right. Let us responsibly develop the resources of our land, for the good of our people."
