AT&T and Cisco Appointed to Carry Out Global Information Technology Energy Efficiency Review for Shell
Dallas, Texas, December 06, 2010 -- AT&T* and Cisco announced today that they have been chosen by Shell to carry out a global energy-efficiency project focused on improving Shell's information technology (IT) infrastructure. The project will involve calculating the CO2 footprint of Shell's IT operations as well as mapping Shell's energy-usage patterns with a goal of ensuring a highly energy-efficient IT network.
"This analysis of the IT infrastructure power consumption represents a further step forward in an ongoing effort to improve energy efficiency in all aspects of Shell's operations," said Alan Matula, group chief information officer of Shell. "It forms an integral part of our drive to improve performance, cut costs, and reduce CO2 emissions.
The project will enable the optimization of underused systems, the elimination of redundant equipment, and a reduction of building space requirements. In the long term, energy-efficient IT services will be embedded into Shell's global IT network, ensuring the consolidation and virtualization of servers and storage, data centers, and branch offices.
AT&T was selected to manage a significant part of Shell's IT infrastructure and telecommunications services as part of a wider series of outsourcing agreements. Cisco's Internet Business Solutions Group was selected to conduct the IT infrastructure energy-consumption audit and make recommendations.
Greg Wieboldt, senior vice president, Global Client Group, AT&T Business Solutions, said: "This project will enable us to develop a single global system which touches every part of the organization and will enable the monitoring and control of energy at a device level, right down to individual servers and computers."
Chris Dedicoat, president of Cisco Europe, said: "Information technology has the power to transform how businesses approach environmental challenges, changing the way they work in an environmentally sensitive way while at the same time supporting continued business growth."
As part of the project, energy management network tools, such as Cisco EnergyWise, will be used to capture power-consumption data in buildings across the business to allow ongoing real-time monitoring and management to help identify carbon-reduction opportunities.
The project will incorporate a range of energy-efficient IT services, such as the consolidation and virtualization of servers and storage, data centers, and branch offices. Also AT&T Telepresence Solutions®, based on Cisco TelePresence® suites, are being deployed, with the goal of lowering companywide greenhouse gas emissions by reducing business-related travel.
