Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium to Launch New Web Site to Educate Youth on Making Healthy Decisions About Their Sexual Health
Dec. 1, 2009
What: An informative presentation on www.iknowmine.org, the Alaska
Native Tribal Health Consortium STD Program's new sexual health Web
site, designed to educate youth and give teenagers and adolescents the
tools necessary to make healthy decisions when it comes to sex.
Why: Alaska Native people experience high rates of STD and are at
increased risk for HIV/AIDS. Alaska Native females have rates of
chlamydia almost 10 times higher than the overall U.S. population and in
2008, gonorrhea rates rose 53% in Alaska Native males and 19% in Alaska
Native females. Although HIV cases have historically been low in the
Alaska Native population, rates continue to increase in both urban and
rural and male and female populations. In 2008, the highest case rates
were among young adults aged 15-24 years. Because of the connections
between chlamydia and gonorrhea with pelvic inflammatory disease,
ectopic pregnancy and infertility and the increased susceptibility of
acquiring HIV when already infected with chlamydia or gonorrhea, it is
important to build programs for addressing this important issue.
When: 12 pm.-1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 4
Where: The Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium, located at 4000
Ambassador Drive in conference room number two on the first floor.
Who: Jessica Leston and Connie Jessen with the Alaska Native Tribal
Health Consortium's Division of Community Health Services will be
presenting more information on this valuable program.
