Stephenson Park Gets New Treehouse Playground

South Anchorage Park Fix-It Brings Neighbors Together

August 22, 2014, Anchorage, AK – Stephenson Park is about to be the coolest spot in the neighborhood: a new playground debuts this weekend with a nature theme.

Until this summer, Stephenson park offered open, natural spaces but few amenities. The Anchorage Park Foundation requested funds from the Rasmuson Foundation and the Alaska State Legislature for $200,000 in upgrades that would include play equipment for children in the neighborhood.

The new playground at Stephenson Park has a nature theme, with treehouse feel to the play equipment nestled in a park full of trees. Play equipment also includes an ADA-standard “Oodle” swing that fits several swingers at once, and a log balance beam. The rest of the park is also getting a makeover – a new ADA accessible path, new picnic area and tables, fresh paint, and thinned brush to improve visibility and safety. A grant from the Arbor Day

Foundation means volunteers will be planting 10 new chokecherry trees in the park.

Volunteers are gathering to celebrate and expand on improvements this Saturday August 23 from 9am-12pm during a Neighborhood Park Fix-It, hosted by the Anchorage Park Foundation and Anchorage Parks and Recreation.

“I see neighbors walking by with kids in strollers peeking in the fence,” says Representative Johnson. "I was happy to help secure state funding and work with volunteers and private groups to make this needed park a reality."

Scope of Saturday’s volunteer work includes:

· Planting trees
· Building flower beds
· Planting flowers
· Painting bollards
· Light brush clearing in forested areas for visibility and safety

Volunteers interested in this event can contact Maeve Lavtar, NevinsMV@muni.org or 343-4355. Saturday’s event at Stephenson Park also welcomes drop-in volunteers. Tools will be provided. Lunch from Smokehouse BBQ will be provided for volunteers.
