Fairbanks Hosts China/US 2014 Arctic Sand Sculpture Exhibition

Fairbanks, Alaska (AK)-The George Horner Ice Art Park is currently sporting sculptures of another kind this month and next. China and Ice Alaska have come together, with financial support from the Chinese Fuming Lighting Company based in Harbin, to create the China/US 2014 Arctic Sand Sculpture exhibition. Close to 20, predominately Chinese, artists are collaborating in the exhibition.

Over 230, ten-ton, dump truck loads of sand were harvested from the same ponds that generate the famously clear “Arctic Diamond” ice used for ice sculptures during the winter months. All that sand was used to craft an event that features over 40 large sand sculptures, an extensive layer of sand, a sand box play area for kids, and a beach-like setting in Alaska’s Interior.

Centrally located at the Ice Art Park at 3050 Philips Field Road in Fairbanks, this inaugural event began on August 9 and will run through September 15. The exhibitions open hours are from 10am through 8pm seven days a week. Pricing is as follows: $10 for adults; $6 for children ages 6-12; and 5 and under are free. This Thursday, August 14 and Friday, August 15 the 2014 Arctic Sand Sculpture exhibition will offer a special promotion: a carload of people will be allowed in to see the sculptures for just $10.
