Participate in Arctic forum on August 14
Lieutenant Governor Mead Treadwell met with Arctic officials today from the U.S. Department of State to discuss priorities for the U.S. Chairmanship of the Arctic Council, and urges fellow Alaskans to do the same during a public forum held in downtown Anchorage tomorrow.

The Alaska Chamber encourages participation in discussions on the Arctic and looks forward to a sustained and focused effort that will advance the issues in the Arctic important to Alaska businesses.

What: Arctic Forum
When: 1:30-3 p.m., Thursday, August 14
Where: NANA Regional Corporation
909 W. 9th Avenue

The forum will be facilitated by Nils Andreassen, Director of the Institute of the North. Representatives from the State Department include Admiral Robert Papp, Special Representative for the Arctic; Ambassador David Balton, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Oceans and Fisheries; and Julie Gourley, Senior Arctic Official.
Support being competitive on August 19
The Alaska State Chamber of Commerce represents hundreds of businesses from Ketchikan to Barrow. Each business, regardless of size, is comprised of real people with real needs and real dreams. Alaska Chamber members believe a no vote on ballot measure one is crucial for our families, for our future, and for Alaska.

Under the ACES tax system, while the Lower 48 oil development boomed, Alaska's production waned and then fell. While not a panacea to industry, the new oil tax system puts Alaska back in the competitive game.

Alaska Chamber member businesses are proudly sporting their vote no on one support by, placing No One On One, Keep Alaska Competitive, Vote No On One signs on their, business property and putting their money where their mouth is by supporting Alaska's, new oil tax system for their families, our future, and for Alaska. Some of have even challenged other companies to a civic engagement (voter turn-out) contest.

The 2014 Alaska Business Week (ABW) summer program wrapped on August 2. Students from around the state attended this year's program (July 27-August 2) hosted at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.

It was a great week with high school students coming together to learn about business and leadership. Participants heard from many speakers as well as working directly with a mentor from the business community through the week.

North Slope Marketplace second winner
Elaine Garner of Nuiqsut has been named the second recipient of the 2014 North Slope Marketplace business plan competition.

The owner of Lil Mo's Supply Store, a locally owned and operated start-up business in Nuiqsut, Alaska specializing in both hunting gear, hardware, tools and materials, Ms. Garner will utilize the $25,000 grant to purchase more shelving and a storage unit, and increase inventory options.

Founded in 2009, the NSMP aims to encourage local, (North-Slope based) economic development. The competition is sponsored by Arctic Slope Regional Corporation and managed by Alaska Growth Capital. Learn more
August EPA public meetings
The EPA's blatant disregard for U.S. and Alaska laws, regulations, and established permitting process is unacceptable. Businesses rely on predictable permitting processes to explore economic investments and eventually create jobs. Contrary to the EPA's public statements, internal communications demonstrate the agency's intent to set precedent to stop future development before it even begins.

For this reason, the Alaska Chamber, along with sister organizations RDC, AOGA, AMA, CAP, and the Alliance jointly filed an amicus brief on the Pebble Limited Partnership and State of Alaska case. The case challenges the EPA's authority to veto a permit prior to a request for the permit being submitted. The hope is it will be considered by the court and be of some help.

The Alaska Chamber encourages its members to "save the date" for the following upcoming public hearings:
  • August 13, 5 p.m. - Nondalton
  • August 13, 5 p.m. - New Stuyahok
  • August 14, 5 p.m. - Dillingham
  • August 14, 5 p.m. - Kokhanok
  • August 15, Noon p.m. - Igiugig
  • August 15, Noon p.m. - Iliamna
