Senate Finance Education Subcommittee To Meet in Anchorage
Two-Day Meeting on August 20 and 21 to focus on total cost of K-12 Education
ANCHORAGE-The Senate Finance Subcommittee for the Department of Education and Early Development is planning a two-day meeting at the Anchorage Legislative Information Office on August 20 and 21. During the hearing, members will explore the total cost of K-12 education including the Base-Student Allocation (BSA), transportation costs, school construction and the Teachers’ Retirement System (TRS).
At the end of Session, Senate Finance Co-Chair Pete Kelly (R-Fairbanks) expanded the subcommittee to include five members. “We realize we have many challenges when it comes to education in our state, but we can’t just keep throwing money at the problem and expect it to get fixed,” said Senator Kelly. “That’s why I felt it was important to expand this subcommittee and put together a real strategy to improve Alaska’s schools.”
The five members of the committee include the committee’s chair, Senator Mike Dunleavy (R-Mat-Su Valley), and Senators Kelly, Anna Fairclough (R-East Anchorage/Eagle River), Gary Stevens (R-Kodiak) and Berta Gardner (D-Anchorage).
“I want to dive deep into the budgets of our schools to figure out where we are spending our money,” said Senator Dunleavy. “I’ve dedicated much of my life to being an educator and I definitely think some of what we will find will be eye-opening and will give us the information we need to make sound decisions when Session begins in January.”
There will be time during the meeting for the public to give comments and input. This meeting is the first of three two-day meetings. Two more meetings are planned for September and October.
