First Day of High School Reserved for Freshmen and New Students
As part of the innovative Ignition program, the first day of school for all high schools on Wednesday, August 21, 2013 is reserved for freshmen and new students only. All other high school students in grades 10 through 12 start school the following day, Thursday, August 22, 2013.
• Wednesday, August 21, 2013 – first day of school for grades 1 through 9 as well as new students in grades 10 through 12.
• Thursday, August 23, 2013 – first day of school for grades 10 through 12.
Ignition is a transition program that helps students build relationships and make a positive shift to high school. On the first day of school, freshmen meet with mentors, attend group activities, tour buildings and familiarize themselves with class schedules.
By allowing freshmen to start the school year without upper class students, teachers and administrators are able to connect and engage with students early in the transition process and foster a more constructive, positive high school experience.
District high schools have various Ignition schedules and activities on the first day of school. Parents, guardians and students should check their high school website for specific Ignition information prior the first day of school.
