August 2013 Alaska Economic Trends
August Trends provides a look at the phenomenon of “job hopping” in Alaska, or workers who switch employers frequently. This analysis is the first of its kind; with time, new data will provide a more complete picture of these worker patterns. For now, we can see which industries and occupations tend to have high percentages of job hoppers and how other factors such as worker age and Alaska’s seasonal economy fit in.
Also this month is the annual review of median rent around the state for a variety of unit types in Alaska’s major markets. Rents have risen 5 percent over the year to a statewide median of $1,119 for all units.
Finally, Spotlight is an overview of the Kodiak Island Borough’s economy, which is largely based on fishing and is makes it one of the seafood capitals of the world.
