Anchorage Residents Collect 38 TONS of Outdated Phone Books Through Think Yellow, Go Green Program
ANCHORAGE, AK (August 13, 2013) – ACS Media, publisher of the ACS Yellow Pages, along with its Sales Agent, The Berry Company, collected more than 38 tons of outdated telephone directories for recycling through the fifth-annual Think Yellow, Go Green program.
The month-long environmental awareness program, which launched at the Summer Solstice Festival, encouraged the Anchorage community to recycle their outdated telephone directories at locations around the city, including Carrs stores, Elmendorf Commissary, and the University of Alaska-Anchorage (UAA).
Volunteers from Berry and local non-profit organization, Alaskans for Litter Prevention and Recycling (ALPAR), were at the Summer Solstice Festival booth collecting outdated books and handing out prizes. The "Moose on the Loose" distributed information about other area recycling drop locations.
Berry is dedicated to keeping directories out of landfills in Anchorage and across the country. Over 750 tons of outdated directories have been collected through the Think Yellow, Go Green program. This year was no exception as the community collected approximately seven more tons than the previous year’s collection total of 31 tons.
“This year’s program was a huge success,” said Laura Cole, Berry’s Senior Director of Marketing. “We kept 76,800 outdated directories out of landfills, and we want to thank the community for its ongoing support.”
Alaska Waste provided recycling containers and hauling services. ACS Yellow Pages are 100 percent recyclable, and the recycled telephone directories from the Think Yellow, Go Green program will be converted into material such as home insulation and mulch.
