Cyrano's Post-Performance Events in August
AUGUST 19TH: The second post-performance special “Sunday Sojourn” hosted by Lael Morgan. Approximately 6 p.m., following the matinee. A free event. Her guest will be Rachel Mason.
Rachel Mason will talk informally about her work in Seward, and to facilitate discussion of other red light districts and prostitutes in Gold Rush boom towns and other Alaska communities. Her special expertise comes from a study she did a few years ago for the National Park Service in Seward, documenting the history of the community’s red light district (known as the Line) between 1918 and 1954.
The project was very popular in Seward, and she interviewed many people who remembered the women who lived and worked on the Line. Like many frontier cities, Seward had a large number of transient men, including miners, seamen, railroad men and soldiers. The red light district was tolerated by the city on grounds that its existence would protect the respectable women of the town.
AUGUST 31ST: approximately 10 p.m., following the performance Authentic Music of the Alaska-Klondike Gold Rush. A personal appearance by author Jean Murray! The Gold Rush was not a silent panorama of sepia-tone stillness. The genuine songs of the Gold Rush ranged from rowdy tunes to mournful laments to dance hall music. Jean will share her expertise and play a little music! Gold Rush Girls, of course, is a National Premiere musical inspired by the music of this era. Jean will share her authentic research on the genuine songs of the Gold Rush.
