Coast Guard Foundation Launches Walter Joseph Hickel, Jr. Scholarship Fund

Stonington, Conn. – The Coast Guard Foundation, a non-profit organization committed to the education, welfare and morale of all Coast Guard members and their families, announced on August 8th the formation of the Walter Joseph Hickel, Jr. Scholarship Fund at its Alaska Awards Dinner, in honor of long-time Coast Guard Foundation director and Alaskan stalwart, Walter “Wally” Hickel, Jr. Mr. Hickel joined the Coast Guard Foundation Board of Directors in 1994. In the ensuing years, he has helped raise nearly $2 million and contributed countless hours of volunteer time and personal resources to make the Foundation’s Alaska Awards dinner a premiere event.

“I am very honored to announce the establishment of the Walter Joseph Hickel, Jr. Scholarship Fund,” said Robert J. Flynn, chairman, Coast Guard Foundation. “This fund will provide scholarship assistance for Coast Guard families stationed in Alaska. It pays tribute and will serve as a lasting legacy to the long and dedicated service of Wally Hickel’s support of the Coast Guard Foundation, as well as Coast Guard personnel and their families.”

The funds raised through the dinner helped build the Coast Guard Foundation Family Recreation Center in Kodiak, provided college scholarships for the children of enlisted personnel, provided education grants for enlisted Coast Guard members stationed in Alaska and provided many Shipmate Fund grants to units and cutters throughout the state.

At the Foundation’s 2010 Alaska Awards Dinner, Wally Hickel, Jr. received the Distinguished Public Service Award and was recognized for his efforts raising funds in Alaska for the Coast Guard Foundation. When awarding Hickel, Jr. his Distinguished Public Service Award, Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Robert J. Papp declared: “Simply put, there would be no Alaska Coast Guard Foundation Awards Dinner without Wally Hickel, Jr.’s leadership and inspiration. He has supported key Foundation initiatives in Alaska benefiting Coast Guard personnel assigned to cutters and remote units located in Cordova, Valdez, Sitka and multiple isolated stations where service members and their families do not have access to local or Department of Defense recreation and family resources. His exceptional personal contributions to the Coast Guard have had a direct and positive bearing on the accomplishments of the Coast Guard’s responsibilities to its citizens, particularly those of Alaska.”

The Hickel family has deep roots in the frontier of Alaska. Mr. Hickel’s father, Wally Sr., served as the state’s governor twice, once in 1966 and again from 1990 to 1994. Mr. Hickel Jr. is Chairman and CEO of Hickel Investment Co., a family owned and operated business in real estate development and operations, including the Hotel Captain Cook.  He has served on numerous Alaska-based and national boards. In addition, he has previously held the position of Chairman of the Preferred Hotels and Resorts Corporation with luxury resorts worldwide.
