Insulation Innovation in Anchorage

Habitat for Humanity - Anchorage partners with Cold Climate Housing Research Center, kbp architects and State Farm to Elevate the Standard of Energy Efficiency in Affordable Housing

Anchorage, AK - Affordable housing providers, home builders, designers and community-oriented Habitat sponsors converge Thursday, Aug. 26, for a demonstration of insulation innovation; REMOTE wall technology. "This home will elevate the standard of energy efficiency employed in affordable housing" states Tamás Deák, Principal, kbp architects and designer of the home.  "People are excited to see this in Anchorage and its use in affordable housing underscores the fact that affordable housing must also take into consideration the long-term cost of ownership. Habitat is excited to be learning about this new technology and we are eager to evaluate the gains in efficiency" boasts Craig Jaeger, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity - Anchorage.

State Farm, one of the lead sponsors of this project will also be in attendance, taking a break from volunteering on the jobsite to present a $7,500 State Farm Good Neighborhood Citizenship grant to Habitat for Humanity - Anchorage. Continuing more than three decades of efforts to create safer, stronger communities, State Farm is committed to strengthening neighborhoods and helping families achieve the dream of homeownership through philanthropic donations and local volunteerism. "State Farm has a tradition of supporting community organizations like Habitat for Humanity-Anchorage," State Farm spokesperson Walt Allen replies. "State Farm is committed to helping build safer, stronger neighborhoods. The State Farm volunteers on-site represent the passion of the company's 85,000 agents and employees, who connect us to the community."

Residential Exterior Membrane Outside-insulation TEchnique presents a superior alternative to standard frame construction. A REMOTE wall differs from a conventionally built wall in that the vapor barrier is applied to the outside of the sheathing, as opposed to the inside of the stud framing. Approximately two thirds of the wall's insulating value is then moved to the outside of the sheathing on top of the vapor barrier. The dew point is now located outside the moisture barrier and condensation within the building envelope is eliminated. The exterior insulation also eliminates concerns of thermal bridging in the framing, significantly increasing the effective R-value of the insulation.
