French Campaign Wins Key Union Endorsement
Most unions are staying neutral in the Democratic primary for governor, but Hollis French has won a major endorsement from the statewide firefighters’ union.
Citing French’s strong record on firefighters’ concerns and public safety in general, the Alaska Professional Fire Fighters Association announced its support for French’s candidacy today.
“Hollis French has always supported fire fighters. He’s always supported public safety,” says Dominic Lozano, Vice-President for the Northern Region.
In particular, Lozano noted Sen. French’s help in passing HB 200 two years ago. The new law makes it easier for firefighters to prove they deserve workers’ compensation when they suffer job-related illnesses common among firefighters, such as lung cancer, heart attack, and emphysema.
“Hollis and his office were essential in getting that legislation passed,” Lozano says. “He was the backbone behind it in the Senate. We’re very appreciative of that.”
“I’m pleased to get the firefighters’ support,” said Sen. French. “I’ve worked hard to make sure firefighters, police and prosecutors have the tools they need to protect Alaskans, and this endorsement reflects that.”
“In a hotly contested primary like this one, it would be easy to stay on the sidelines and wait to see who wins,” French says. “The firefighters are showing real leadership in supporting my campaign now. They’re part of a groundswell of support that will carry us to victory on August 24”
The Alaska Professional Fire Fighters Association has affiliate locals in Anchorage, Fairbanks, Juneau, Ketchikan, Shemya and North Pole.
