DOT&PF Resuming Convoys on Section of the Taylor Highway

(FAIRBANKS, Alaska) – The Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities (DOT&PF) is coordinating eight round-trip convoys on the Taylor Highway during four days later this week.

The convoys will travel from Chicken, milepost 67, to the junction of the Top of the World Highway, milepost 95.

Extreme rain late last week further damaged the Taylor Highway, washing out large sections of the road and causing extensive slides to cover other sections. The road is still heavily damaged. Due to the narrow road, size restrictions are in place: no trailers of any kind, no motor homes, no overloads, no over-width loads and no buses.

Pilot cars will lead the convoys to ensure safe travel through narrow sections of highway.

The convoy schedule is as follows.

Convoy Destination

Friday, Aug. 13

Saturday, Aug. 14

Sunday, Aug. 15

Monday, Aug. 16

If travelers miss the departure time, they will need to wait for the next convoy. These are the only scheduled convoys at this time, but DOT&PF anticipates continuing the convoys or opening the road with flagging stations next week.

Convoys are weather dependent. In case of heavy rain, travel will be cancelled.

It is unknown when the Taylor Highway from the junction of the Top of the World Highway, milepost 95, to Eagle will reopen, but estimates range from two to three weeks.

A hot line and website were established last week to provide updates on the Taylor Highway. The hot line number is (907) 322-3844 and is staffed seven days per week from 8 a.m., to 8 p.m. The website is located at www.dot.alaska.gov/nreg/taylor-repairs/ .

Information updates are also available online at 511.alaska.gov or by telephoning 511.
