Books-N-Badges kicks-off book drive for Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - As summer wanes and students begin a new school year, a group of local agencies is coordinating a book drive to promote reading in rural Alaska.  The Books-N-Badges program is rounding up donated, age appropriate books for distribution to over 50 different villages in the Yukon-Kuskokwim region.

As a member of the Books-N-Badges program, GCI has teamed with the U.S. Marshals Service, Alaska State Troopers and Northern Air Cargo to collect and distribute donated books to children living in the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta region of Alaska.  GCI is providing drop off and collection points for books at select GCI stores in Anchorage, Eagle River, Palmer and Wasilla.

“This opportunity is a natural fit for GCI,” said company Vice President and General Manager Consumer Services Paul Landes. “We’re committed to rural Alaska and understand there’s a need in these communities. A gift of books will make a difference in these young people’s lives.”

Across 10 stores in Anchorage and the Matanuska-Susitna Borough, locals are encouraged to drop-off donated books that will be collected and delivered to Northern Air Cargo for transport to the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta area.

“Northern Air Cargo is glad to be part of the effort to promote reading in rural Alaska,” said Director of Marketing and Communications Blake Arrington. “We understand the importance reading plays in bringing families together and forming strong communities.”

Northern Air Cargo will deliver the donated books to the Alaska State Troopers and the U.S. Marshals.  The books will then be distributed to various villages across the region.

“The Books-N-Badges program is just one-way we can interact with the next generation of Alaskans in our rural communities,” said Alaska State Trooper Director Colonel Audie Holloway. “The Troopers and the U.S. Marshals are excited to have this opportunity to make a positive impact on the lives of kids throughout the Y-K Delta.”

A list of drop-off locations is available online at www.GCI.com <http://www.GCI.com> .  The website includes a link to the 2010-2011 State Battle of the Books reading list with recommendations on age appropriate books and authors.

“We’re looking for books for all ages of school children, grades K – 12,” said U.S. Marshal for Alaska Rob Heun. “The Books-N-Badges program is a perfect vehicle to get youth in rural Alaska reading. We appreciate the partnership with both GCI, the Troopers and Northern Air Cargo in helping make a difference in these kids’ lives.”

The first distribution of donated books is expected to take place in September.
