AMHS Releases Draft Patterns for Spring, Summer 2011 Sailings(JUNEAU, Alaska) - The Alaska Marine Highway System (AMHS) has released draft sailing patterns for Spring and Summer 2011. The patterns are available for review and comment and will be discussed during teleconferences and public meetings Aug. 19, 2010.
Sailing patterns and comments are used to develop a schedule for reservations beginning in October. The draft schedule will be posted at www.ferryalaska.com .
Jim Beedle, Deputy Commissioner of Marine Operations with the Department of Transportation and Public Facilities, said the draft traffic patterns are designed to:
- maintain the reliable base schedule of the last three years which has rebuilt ridership (Passenger traffic to date is up 4.4 percent and vehicle traffic up 3.0 percent compared to 2009)
- maintain a level of added service to the Aleutian chain in the busy summer months; and
- supplement the current service from Bellingham by the motor vessel Columbia and bring more independent travelers to Alaska.
The teleconference and public meetings for Southeast Alaska schedules is at 10 a.m. and at 1:30 p.m., for Southwest and Prince William Sound schedules. The toll free number to participate by teleconference is 1-800-315-6338, conference code 3902#. For individuals wishing to participate in person, the meeting will be held at the AMHS port engineers' waterfront office at 3713 Tongass Ave. Comments may be faxed to 907-586-8365 or emailed to dot.amhs.comments.alaska.gov .
