Local and State Officials to Meet with Census Bureau in Fairbanks
FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Interior Delegation Chairman, Representative Scott Kawasaki, will meet with local and state officials and the Census Bureau regarding the population counts in the Fairbanks North Star Borough (FNSB). Representative Kawasaki will be joined by members of the Interior Delegation, the Commissioner of Labor Click Bishop and Mayor Whitaker of the Fairbanks North Star Borough. The meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, Sept.2, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.
"This is an excellent opportunity for the Interior Delegation to discuss the accuracy of the census.", Kawasaki said "There have been reports of discrepancies and potentially underrepresented populations in past census counts. This meeting will provide an opportunity to resolve some of the inaccuracies and misunderstandings in census process."
According to the Fairbanks North Star Borough, the Census Bureau significantly undercounted the borough in the 2000 Census. The borough has been working to ensure that the potential irregularity is resolved by the 2010 Census. The FNSB has been in contact with state and federal officials to ensure that the Census Bureau understands the unique living environment in the Interior.
"If there is a problem with the way Interior Alaska is counted during the Census we must fix it. The key is to ensure every Fairbanksan is counted and individual privacy is respected." Kawasaki said.
