Governor Parnell Signs Legislation Supporting Medical Professionals

April 8, 2014, Juneau, Alaska – Governor Sean Parnell today signed legislation to support medical professionals who volunteer their services, including those participating in the Alaska Mission of Mercy (AKMOM) event on April 11 and 12 in Anchorage. House Bill 269 is sponsored by Representative Steve Thompson.

“I appreciate Representative Thompson’s work to pass HB 269,” Governor Parnell said. “By allowing medical professionals who volunteer their services in the state to be covered under Alaska’s civil immunities law, Alaskans will benefit – especially those attending the inaugural Alaska Mission of Mercy event. I also extend my gratitude to the many volunteers who give their time and expertise to such a worthy cause.”

The legislation amends the Volunteer Health Care Provider Act, which offers state-licensed health care providers who volunteer health care services immunity from civil liability. HB 269 extends these same provisions to out-of-state providers who hold courtesy temporary licenses. The bill ensures volunteers from out of state have the same protections as in-state providers.

Specifically, HB 269 will help clear up liability concerns surrounding the upcoming Alaska Mission of Mercy event organized by the Alaska Dental Society. The program provides free dental care to residents who would not otherwise have access.
