Academic and Trades Decathlon to Challenge Yukon Kuskokwim Students
ANIAK, AK, (April 23, 2014) – Next week, 175 students from the six Yukon Kuskokwim school districts will participate in an academic and trades decathlon. Held from April 29 through May 2, the decathlon will take place in Aniak Jr. Sr. High School and include grades seven through 12.
The first of its kind for a region that is typically underserved, the decathlon is an opportunity for YK students to showcase their academic skills and achievements.
The four-day event is comprised of individual and team competitions as well as mining career exploration sessions.
The individual competitions will include topics such as math, science, geography and keyboarding. Competitors will also write an essay and give a speech. The team competitions will incorporate sports, design and academics; specific events include a “Mining Careers Super Quiz,” a banner design contest and volleyball and basketball games.
The event will also focus on workforce development initiatives. Several industry experts will teach the trade sessions, which will be focused on careers in the mining industry.
First and second places from each grade will win a trip to the Donlin Gold camp, where they will be offered further career exploration.
The event is sponsored by Donlin Gold, Alaska Construction Academies, EXCEL Alaska and the Kuspuk School District.
