AEA Works to Reduce Cost of Energy by Encouraging Innovation

Emerging Energy Technology Fund Spurs New Energy Technology

(Anchorage) – In an effort to support emerging energy technologies and new ways of conserving energy, five projects have been selected to receive grant funds through the second round of the Alaska Energy Authority (AEA) Emerging Energy Technology Fund. The projects include heating and energy storage demonstrations.

“The Emerging Energy Technology Fund is providing an opportunity to Alaska entrepreneurs to bring their technologies to market, while potentially providing energy solutions for many communities,” said Sean Skaling, deputy director for alternative energy and energy efficiency.

The Emerging Energy Technology fund was created in 2010 to support emerging energy technologies in Alaska that have the reasonable expectation to be brought to commercialization within five years. Priority is given to Alaska entities. During this round $2.4 million was made available to Alaska businesses, utilities, non-profits, tribal or local governments and other organizations to test emerging technologies or methods of conserving energy or to improve or deploy an existing technology that has not been demonstrated in Alaska.

“Alaska continues to push the boundaries of innovation in the search for more affordable energy,” continued Skaling.

“The Emerging Energy Technology Fund helps bridge the gap between research and development and commercially-ready technologies.”

The first round of projects was selected in November 2012. These five projects have been selected for the second round of Emerging Energy Technology Fund awards. Twenty-seven abstract proposals were received by AEA and ten were invited to provide full applications and presentations to be evaluated by AEA and the seven-member Emerging Energy Technology Fund Advisory Committee.

The list of Emerging Energy Technology Fund projects can be viewed at akenergyauthority.org. The Alaska Energy Authority is a public corporation of the state. AEA’s purpose is to reduce the cost of energy in Alaska.
