Opera Fairbanks Announces Carmen Cast Change

Internationally Acclaimed Mezzo Soprano Will Sing Lead Role
Fairbanks, Alaska - Opera Fairbanks, the northern most professional opera company in the United States, is announcing an unexpected change in its summer 2013 production. Fairbanks born Vivica Genaux, previously billed in the title role in Georges Bizet’s Carmen, will be unable to perform this summer. Instead, internationally acclaimed mezzo, Patricia Risley will sing the role of Carmen, July 11 and 13, 2013.

Ms. Genaux deeply regrets that she is forced to cancel all of her 2013 summer appearances. Her New York agent, Robert Lombardo of Lombardo & Associates, LLC explained that she needs to have a procedure done and the recuperation time is such that she cannot be with Opera Fairbanks in July.

"The date was chosen by her physician and a number of other engagements will be affected also," Lombardo stated. "Vivica will be back with Opera Fairbanks, her home company, on another occasion as her schedule permits."

Opera Fairbanks will present Carmen on July 11 and 13, 2013. Gregory Buchalter of the Metropolitan Opera will conduct. Stage direction is by Jonathon Loy, and choreography by Sara Erde, both from the Met.

"It was going to be her North American debut playing the lead of Carmen," said Theresa Reed, Opera Fairbanks President. "We were so looking forward to Vivica returning to her home town. While we’re disappointed that Vivica will be not be with us this year, we are so thrilled to hear that our new lead singer will be another world renowned opera superstar. Patricia Risley will complement our cast quite nicely."

In addition to Ms. Risley, other cast members include Viktor Antipenko, as Don Jose; Trevor Scheunemann as Escamillo; Valeria Lari as Mercedes; Joseph Perron as Morales and Tess Altivaro as Frasquita. Micaela will be played by Anchorage singer, Anastasia Jamieson. David Miller of Juneau will sing the role of Zuniga, and Emerson Eads and Scott Raneri of Fairbanks will perform as Remendado and Dancairo, respectively.

The public is encouraged to visit www.operafairbanks.org to learn more about Carmen and the rest of the 2013 Viva! Season.
