New Book for Nonprofit Staff and Board Members Launches This Week in Alaska

Book Provides Holistic Guide to Factors of Sustainability

Anchorage, AK – A new book just published by The Foraker Group is intended to change the way nonprofits view sustainability – both in Alaska and across the country. The book, Focus on Sustainability:  A Nonprofit’s Journey, was released in Alaska this week and will be available for sale nationwide beginning April 29th.

According to Dennis McMillian, Foraker President and CEO, the purpose of the book is to help nonprofit staff, volunteers and board members operate more purposefully. Ten percent of Alaska’s workforce is in the nonprofit sector and one in three Alaskans serves on a nonprofit board, so the book has application to a wide audience.

“Other books treat sustainability purely from a financial perspective,” McMillian said. “Instead, we believe sustainability is a journey taken every day by nonprofits to help them become resilient and better able to meet challenges they may encounter along the way.”

Focus on Sustainability:  A Nonprofit’s Journey will be available beginning April 29th on Amazon.com and is for sale at The Foraker Group’s Anchorage office, 161 Klevin Street, Suite 101 for $25.

On Monday and Tuesday of this week, The Foraker Group is hosting its 2013 Leadership Summit. More than 450 board, staff, and volunteers are meeting in Anchorage to learn, share and reflect – gaining new insights and skills. National and local experts told Summit attendees it’s okay for nonprofits to do more than “just the work,” and helped them learn valuable ways to better tell their stories. Everyone at the summit received a copy of the new book, courtesy of Rasmuson Foundation. Follow Twitter activity surrounding the summit at #AKSummit.

“Alaska has one of the highest per capita ratio of nonprofits in the country,” said McMillan. “Successful organizations will be those that act strategically, stay current on new skills, and understand the factors that lead to sustainable behavior. We hope this book will provide a road map to get there.”

The Foraker Group is Alaska’s nonprofit association, which is dedicated to increasing the leadership and management skills of professionals and volunteers working in the state’s nonprofit and tribal organizations. The association provides cost-effective assistance to staff and boards through shared services, organizational development, public policy, and educational opportunities and facilitates partnerships where skills and ideas are shared to build the capacity of each organization.
