John Harmon expected to take Lumen to the next level

ANCHORAGE – Lumen Christi High School announced today it has named John Harmon as its new principal. After a summer of travel and continued studies, Mr. Harmon will join Lumen Christi in time for the 2013-2014 school year.

“The school is growing. We are pleased to welcome an administrator who will build on that momentum,” said Rev. Leo Walsh. “Mr. Harmon brings a philosophy of lifelong learning and a passion for Catholic education which seeks to develop one’s spiritual, intellectual, social and physical needs.”

Mr. Harmon grew up in Alaska. He attended Glacier View Elementary and is a graduate of Palmer High School. He holds a juris doctor from Capital University and received a bachelor’s degree from Houghton College in New York. Mr. Harmon will receive his Master of Education in school leadership, with a concentration in Catholic Theology this summer from St. Joseph’s College in Maine.

Mr. Harmon’s work experience also shows his commitment to excellence and to Catholic education. He practiced law in a prestigious law firm where he represented various Fortune 500 companies. During his time as an attorney, Mr. Harmon taught classes at Capital University and was a regular guest speaker at The Ohio State University. He later became in-house counsel for Nationwide Insurance, where he served as associate general counsel until he retired and returned home to Alaska to pursue a more dedicated career in education. His most recent position was as president for Charter College in Alaska.

“Mr. Harmon demonstrates proven leadership with a strong commitment to educational excellence and Catholic values,” said Lumen Christi School Board Chairman Matt Fagnani. “We are pleased to welcome him to the school.”

Lumen Christi, a private Catholic Jr./Sr. high school is a ministry of St. Benedict’s Parish.   With small classroom size and dedicated faculty, Lumen offers one of the best academic learning environments in Anchorage. Imagine attending a school where teachers are invested in developing young minds with strong character and a spiritual foundation. Our students thrive under a low student-teacher ratio and advanced curriculum supported by dedicated sports, charitable and cultural programs. We are located at 8110 Jewel Lake Road, on the campus of St Benedict’s Parish.
