UAA one of 11 universities nationwide selected to participate in VetSuccess on Campus program

Program supports veterans in their readjustment into the civilian workforce through postsecondary education

ANCHORAGE, AK – The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has selected the UAA Anchorage campus as one of only 11 universities in the U.S. to participate in the nationally recognized VetSuccess on Campus program. The new programs kicks off at UAA next Monday, April 9.

The selection of UAA comes after a yearlong effort led by the Office of Student Affairs to increase awareness of unique military and veteran student experiences at UAA.

“This continued effort for further improvements in the service to the military and veteran student population is evidence of UAA’s desire and willingness to stay on the leading edge of educating our service members, veterans and their families,” says Bruce Schultz, UAA’s vice chancellor for student affairs.

The VetSuccess on Campus program supports veterans in their readjustment into the civilian workforce through post-secondary education. The program will fund and provide UAA with full-time VA coordinators who are specially trained in the VetSuccess on Campus framework. Coordinators will work directly with the university’s Military and Veteran Community Services assistant to develop and enhance existing training for students, faculty and staff. They will serve on the Military and Veteran Student Task Force as well as meet with students and liaise with the VA on benefit issues involving UAA’s students.

“VetSuccess on Campus will significantly enhance UAA’s ability to serve our veterans as they transition from combat to college and will help us strengthen our bonds to the local military community,” Schultz says. “Cooperation between our Military and Veteran Community Services assistant and the VetSuccess on Campus coordinator will serve as a multiplier, making both parties more effective, efficient and better positioned to directly impact the students they serve.”
