State's 2012 remote recreational cabin site lottery deadline is April 26

(Anchorage, AK) – The Department of Natural Resources encourages Alaska residents to apply for the 2012 Remote Recreational Cabin Sites land sale lottery.  The deadline to apply is Thursday, April 26.

The Remote Recreational Cabin Sites program is in the tradition of Alaska’s stake-it-yourself land sales. It allows eligible Alaska residents to stake a parcel of State-owned land in a designated staking area, lease the land until a survey and appraisal are completed, and purchase the parcel at fair market value.

A total of 225 staking authorizations will be awarded to successful applicants. Five areas are being offered in the Northern and Southcentral Regions:  Albert Creek North, Teklanika III, Zitziana, Kakhonak Lake, and Aniak – Doestock.

The application period begins Monday, March 12, and ends at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, April 26.

The 2012 brochure and application forms are available free of charge at many DNR offices, by mail, or online at http://dnr.alaska.gov/mlw/landsale.  There is a $25 filing fee and applications are accepted online, in person, by mail, or by fax.

Staking authorizations will be awarded by lottery if the number of applications exceeds the available authorizations for an area.  The lottery drawing will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 8.  Applicants do not need to be present to win.  Successful applicants may begin staking cabin sites on June 8 and must finish by March 18, 2013.

The land offered is not easily accessible.  These areas are best reached by plane or boat.  Some others can be reached by ATV, snowmachine, or foot.  Alaskans that have participated in recent years say that staking a parcel is challenging, fun, and personally rewarding, and it exemplifies the unique aspects of living in Alaska.
