Providence hosting collection site for National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day

ANCHORAGE, AK - Providence Alaska Medical Center is hosting a drive-thru collection site during National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day.

Residents are encouraged to clean out their medicine cabinets and bring any unused, unwanted or expired prescription medications to the drive-thru disposal site, located near Entrance 4, outside of Providence Imaging Center. Medications will be disposed of in a safe, legal and environmentally friendly way. There is no charge for the service.

This national initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. According to the U.S. Department of Justice Drug Enforcement Administration, medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition, Americans are now advised that their usual methods for disposing of unused medicines - flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash - pose potential safety and health hazards.
