(Anchorage) — The fourth annual GYT: Get Yourself Tested campaign rolls on across Alaska.  GYT is a national campaign supported by a broad coalition of partners, including: Planned Parenthood of the Great Northwest (PPGNW,) the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Kaiser Family Foundation and MTV.  The campaign is designed to address the high rates of STDs among those under 25.

Alaska has the dubious distinction of having the highest chlamydia rate in the nation.  Throughout the month of April, Planned Parenthood of the Great Northwest has been talking about the testing and treatment of STDs in support of GYT in an effort to keep Alaskans healthy.  In addition, PPGNW will end the month by offering a free day of testing for chlamydia and gonorrhea on Monday, April 30, 2012, at its health centers in Anchorage, Soldotna and Fairbanks.  Planned Parenthood health centers offer affordable STD testing throughout the year, and they welcome patients of every background.

“STDs often have no symptoms so many people who are infected don't know it.  Getting tested is simply a basic part of staying healthy,” said Clover Simon, PPGNW Federal Programs Administrator.  “Lack of information, misconceptions, or social stigma can keep many young people from getting tested for STDs, but people should know that testing is easier than ever before.  Planned Parenthood is here to help people get tested and stay healthy.”

GYT public service messages air throughout the year on MTV channels with cross promotions with health centers and community organizations.  Extensive information resources — including a dedicated website (www.GYTnow.org), which provides basic information about common STDs, talking tips, and a zip code locator to find local testing locations — as well as a mobile testing locator, GYTNOW (498669) — provide the audience with more information.

“GYT is about taking control of your sex life – by getting tested and talking openly about it.  Getting tested is easier than ever before.  Don’t wait for your partner to start the conversation – take charge!  By talking about sex you are showing that you care about each other,” said Simon.

The free day of testing in Anchorage, Fairbanks and Soldotna will be Monday, April 30th.  Appointments will be accepted or clients can walk in to be tested.  To make an appointment, please call 800-230-PLAN(7526) or log on at www.ppgnw.org/appt

The Anchorage Health Center is located at 4001 Lake Otis Parkway, Suite 101 and will be open from 9 AM to 5 PM.  The Fairbanks Health Center is located at 1867 Airport Way, Suite 160B and will be open between 10 AM and 4 PM.  The Soldotna Health Center is located at 130 East Redoubt Avenue and will be open between 9:30 AM and 5:30 PM.

GYT launched in 2009 as an extension of a longstanding public information partnership between MTV and the Kaiser Family Foundation. It is supported by a broad range of organizations including the Planned Parenthood Federation of America, the National Coalition of STD Directors (NCSD), American College Health Association (ACHA), American Social Health Association (ASHA), the National Chlamydia Coalition (NCC), the CDC, and various state and local health departments, colleges and universities, and other community groups and non-profits. Gilead Sciences, Inc. provides support and resources for select elements of the campaign. CDC provided assistance to ensure scientific accuracy of GYT health information. Comprehensive informational resources — designed for Web and mobile applications — provide facts and referrals to local health centers.  For more information, visit www.GYTNOW.org or www.ppgnw.org
