Opera Fairbanks Fundraiser

FAIRBANKS,ALASKA (APRIL 2, 2012)—  Opera Fairbanks will be hosting a performance of PDQ Bach’s “Half-Act Opera entitled, “The Stoned Guest” to be held in the Alaska Centennial Center for the Arts at Pioneer Park, on Friday, April 13, 2012, at 7:00 PM. This is a premier fund raising event for Opera Fairbanks, an organization dedicated to bringing high quality opera to Interior Alaska since its founding in 2005.

The evening begins with a mini-concert of operatic hits performed by our resident professional opera singers and conducted by George Rydlinski, and accompanied by pianist Jamila Hla Shwe. Tickets for this event can be purchased online at www.operafairbanks.org for $50.00/person.

PDQ Bach’s opera, “The Stoned Guest,” is actually the work of Peter Schickele, who uses the alias for other classical music parodies such as,” The Intimate PDQ Bach,” “The Wurst of PDQ Bach,” and “A Little Nightmare Music.” Composer, musician, author, satirist—Schickele is internationally recognized as one of the most versatile artists in the field of music. His works, now well in excess of 100 for symphony orchestras, choral groups, chamber ensembles, voice, movies and television, have given him “a leading role in the ever-more-prominent school of American composers who unselfconsciously blend all levels of American music.” (John Rockwell, the New York Times)

Immediately after the presentation of “The Stoned Guest,” the audience is invited to gather in the exhibit hall and partake in an afterglow reception consisting of wine and hors d'oeuvre, prepared by Lavelle’s Bistro and The Pump House.

Additional features of the evening include a dessert auction and a guest appearance of the Fairbanks Roller Girls who are volunteering as servers throughout the evening. Decadent desserts are being donated by various local bakers, including delicious pies from the Hilltop Restaurant.

The "Stoned Guest"  singers and their character names:
Mezzanine Soprano Donna Ribalda, a high-born lady of the lowlands, performed by Amy Horstman Ingram.
Off-Coloratura Carmen Ghia, a woman of ailing repute, performed by Kirsten Hutchinson.

Il Comendatoreador, a knight-in-dulled armor Performed by Thomas Szidloski.

Located in Interior Alaska, Opera Fairbanks is the nation's farthest north professional opera company.  It was founded in December 2005 by Cassandra Tilly, Theresa Reed, Morgan Reed, and James Holm. It is the only professional company in Interior Alaska devoted solely to opera production.
