McDowell Group Hires Orell as Project Manager

ANCHORAGE -- McDowell Group is pleased to announce it has hired Laurie Orell to serve as a Project Manager in the firm’s Anchorage office. “Laurie’s analytical and writing skills, coupled with her extensive experience working in Alaska’s health and social services field, are an excellent fit for our firm,” said McDowell Group Principal Jim Calvin. “During her career, she has developed expertise in using statistical methods to analyze data and provide meaningful solutions for program and policy development.”

Prior to coming to McDowell Group, Laurie served as a researcher for the Southcentral Foundation managing community-level substance use and socioeconomic data. She received the Living our Values Award, the highest honor presented by Southcentral Foundation for her work in reducing substance use within the Anchorage community. In addition, she worked at the Alaska Native Epidemiology Center within the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium as an Epidemiologist. She received the Champion of Care Award for efforts to make public health data more accessible within the organization.

Her public health research has been published in the Journal of Environmental Health and the Journal of Health Care for the Poor and Underserved.
“I am excited about using my quantitative and qualitative research experience,” Orell said. “I also look forward to applying these skills to community development, health, social services, and program evaluation projects throughout the state.”

Orell graduated from Smith College in 2000 with a bachelor’s degree in anthropology and Latin American studies. She earned a master’s degree in public health from Emory University in 2005. She is a Certified Professional in Public Health (CPH) and a member of Delta Omega, a public health honorary society. She is in the process of completing a certificate in Geographic Information Systems from Pennsylvania State University.

McDowell Group has a full-time staff of 14 employees with offices in Anchorage and Juneau. This year the firm is celebrating its 40th year of providing research and consulting services to a wide array of private sector firms, government entities, and non-profit organizations throughout Alaska and the Pacific Northwest.
