Legislature Grants Free Death Certificates to Families of Deceased Veterans

JUNEAU – Today, the Alaska Legislature passed legislation allowing a surviving spouse, next of kin, or other relative of a deceased veteran to get up to four free certified death certificates of the deceased. Families often need a certified copies of a death certificate to process various benefits for which they are entitled as a result of their loss.

“Passing this bill shows our respect for Alaska’s veterans and their families and will provide a valuable service to their families in their bereavement,” said Representative Max Gruenberg (D-Anchorage), the prime sponsor of the legislation.

The bill, House Bill 129 (HB 129), is modeled on an Arizona statute. It allows the state to provide up to four free certified copies of the death certificate per veteran to the eligible recipients to help them obtain death benefits.

The bill now goes to the governor for his signature.
